Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
